Mathematics
(From Left to Right)
MATH - 4 YEARS
Although instruction covers the traditional topics in mathematics – algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and calculus – it differs substantially in approach. Sometimes called “teaching to the problem,” this approach stresses the process rather than the product of mathematical thinking. It invites students to ask their own questions and to formulate their own solutions. It encourages them to work in groups, solving problems together. The creative use of technology is an important ingredient in negotiating this process, employing computers, calculators, and the Internet. At the same time, students are exposed to the ancient and medieval roots of mathematics. And they delve into the mysteries of probability by learning the wages of chance. In the senior year students who qualify can take the Advanced Placement course in calculus. The math department also holds special, after school, SAT preparation courses for juniors and first trimester seniors.
